What is a forensic evaluation?

A forensic evaluation is a process in which a psychologist or psychiatrist or mental health provider will be appointed to evaluate the family through various documents, tests, interviews and third parties. These evaluations are normally done when custody is an issue in the case. It is also most common for these evaluations to occur if there are concerns regarding mental heath, abuse or substance abuse.

Once the evaluation is completed the evaluator drafts an extremely detailed report stating their observations, findings and their suggested guidance as to how custody should be resolved. The evaluator is only allowed to give guidance as to how custody can be resolved but cannot make the express decision.
